20 Before 20

First I would like to apologize for how MIA I've been this past week, it's been a busier first week back that I could imagine. I've got a friend who literally has two test next week, and we just started this past Wednesday.

It blows my mind that I will be entering into my twenties tomorrow. Not that I would ever want to stay in my teens, I've never really felt nine-teen. I guess some would say I'm an old soul - can't say I'm arguing.

But yes, on August 31st I will officially be a twenty-something. This year instead of sharing a wish list (because lets be real, when I want things I typically just buy them) I thought I would share a little wisdom - twenty things I've learned before turning twenty.

  1. You can't please everyone // Someone told me this last year when I was struggling to make some big decisions, and it is so true. It applies to every situation perfectly. No matter what you decide to do, not everyone is going to be 100% happy with your decision.
  2. You have to love yourself first // This is probably the biggest piece of advice I could give anyone. When you accept yourself as you are your whole outlook on life is different.
  3. Family comes first // The older you get the more you realize how often friends come and go - but family is ALWAYS there.
  4. Its okay to lose touch with friends // This I've seen happens especially after leaving high school and heading to college. Its always a big time of change, and you start your adult life. Don't stay friends with someone just because of how long you've known them, if you aren't growing together then you're growing apart.
  5. No job is undignified // You will learn something new from every experience you have. I am a full believer that everyone should work at least a little in the service or retail industry, I've worked both and it really fine-tunes your manners.
  6. The golden rule is a good rule // enough said
  7. Its the intangible things that mean the most
  8. Follow your gut feeling // You know how when something isn't right you feel it? Then you do it anyways and regret it? Yeah, Olivia Pope definitely knows what she's talking about.
  9. Be thankful for everything you have // no matter how bad your day might be going, chances are you have something good going for you in your life. Make sure to be grateful for it because there are always those less fortunate.
  10. No one is perfect // Everyone has got their problems no matter how their lives may seem on the outside.
  11. Give it your all or it's not worth doing // It drives me crazy when people don't even try because if its something I want I work hard for it. If you're not going to try, whats the point?
  12. You're always going to have regrets // I don't understand when people say that they try to live by no regrets, because you will always regret something whether its eating your weight in chips and salsa or leaving things unsaid.
  13. Bad things happen to good people // Unfortunately we've all seen it happen, or had something absolutely devastating change your life completely.
  14. Sometimes you need to take a step back // I forget this all the time. Life gets busy, your schedule gets crazy, and next thing you know you're crashing. When things are feeling out of hand, stepping back from the situation can give you a better perspective.
  15. Don't settle // For everything. You have the power to mold your life into what you want, make the most of it!
  16. Actions speak louder than words // You can say anything you want, but making the effort and actually doing what you say you will goes a long way.
  17. Don't lose sight of your goals // When you forget what your goals are you forget what you're working so hard for.
  18. Treat yourself, but don't overindulge // You work hard, you should treat yourself and reap the benefits of what you're working so hard for. People get into trouble when they buy things they don't need to impress people they don't even know.
  19. Surround yourself with those that bring out the best in you // When you're surrounded by positive people your whole outlook just seems so much more positive.
  20. Remember your values // At the end of the day, you will live your life according to what you believe. The second you let those values go you lose little pieces of yourself and once they are gone you can't get them back.

What's In My School Bag

A lot of schools have started this past week - we fortunately do not actually start until Tuesday which is perfect since I have been working non stop this this week (and of course, this weekend). But boy am I excited to go back already. I'm a creature of habit, so I love the routine of the school year.

I'm kind of a nosey person and I love what's in my bag post (don't worry, there is one in the works!) but today I thought I would share what I keep in my backpack for school as well as how I organize my notes for class.

First things first, you have to start with a good backpack. I mean like a really high quality, supportive back pack because those books can cause serious back problems. I've never been a big tote person because they tend to kill my shoulders. I have a North Face Recon Backpack and I absolutely adore it. I got it for Christmas my junior year of high school and this year I will be a junior in collegeand have no plans what so ever on retiring it anytime soon. Definitely one of the best gifts I ever received. (I always recommend black because it goes with everyone and doesn't show dirt!)

Inside the large compartment of my bag I keep a 5-subject notebook and use this to organize all my notes for class. Then of course my Jumbo Lilly Pulitzer Planner, see post about more great options here, two folders (for MTW and TR classes), and occasionally my MacBook Pro depending on what I'm doing that day in class. I also tend to switch between a few pouches for my pencil case - this one is from Target's dollar section.

In the second, small compartment of my bag I keep my calculator, hand cream, and a 31 zipper pouch (holding hair elastics, headphones, mini stapler, etc). This pouch is seriously a lifesaver - I have all these little things you never know when you'll need and it keeps it all tidy and clutter-free.

Do you prefer totes or backpacks for school? Let me know
(And don't forget your umbrella this school year!)
Have a great weekend everyone!

Lilly Pulitzer After Party Sale

I know I'm about two days late on this one - but the Lilly Pulitzer After Party Sale started online Monday morning and ends tonight at midnight! If you haven't already stocked up / checked it out, make sure you do so! This sale happens once a year and lots of Lilly goes on super sale.

In the years past the Lilly website has always crashed right at 8AM when the sale goes live and its been hard to get a good deal under $100. Sunday night I was talking to Hill from From Mississippi With Love on twitter and made a comment about there not being much under $100 - I am definitely taking that comment back, this year there were (and still are) some unbelievable deals!! (And did I mention I only got kicked off once? Last year it took me three hours to get into the website!)

I picked up the Janice Shift Dress in Spa Blue Lets Cha Cha ($69) and a Murfee Scarf in Lulu ($29). I have been wanting a Murfee for the longest time, and this season fell in love with the detailing on the Janice so I was super excited to score both for less than a regularly priced Murfee. Now I just need my order to ship already!

Unfortunately the two items I picked out are no longer available, but there is a lot of fantastic stuff left on the site so make sure you take a look before it closes tonight!

What did you pick out from the sale? Let me know

Mani Monday + August Julep Maven Unboxing

Remember when I shared my first Julep Box last month (that you can get for $2.99 btw!)? I was SO impressed with the polishes they sent me - the formula is great and the colors are really unique. You know how people say when you love something, you buy every color of it? Well yeah - that was my intention, so when the window opened to pick out your August box I couldn't get to it fast enough.

I'm not going to lie, online I was a little disappointed with the colors picked out for this month. It was the "Wanderlust" collection, and there was a mixture of blues and purples and all of one red color - which is a big problem for the girl who sticks to traditional colors and neutrals. The craziest color I've gotten before this was Essie's "Mint Candy Apple". (Their beauty selection was on point though!)

But with back to school (aka football season) coming up, I sure have been in the purple and gold mood lately. So I ended up picking a lilac-looking purple "Katie", a glittery gold "Tazeen", and their Oxygen Smoothing Base Coat.

What I received my Maven box I was pretty surprised - I had Katie, I had the base coat, but Tazeen was replaced with Sushmita. (Which was kind of a let down, but hey you can't go wrong with pink right?!)

Before now I had been using the Seche base coat, and before that the Orly Bonder, but I was blown away by Julep's Oxygen Smoothing Base Coat. It dries on your nails to a matte-like finish in seconds and makes polish application a breeze. Would DEFINITELY repurchase. It's pretty pricy, but being able to get it in my maven box was great! I ended up liking Katie (pictured below) on my nails a lot more than I thought I would. Something I've noticed about my Julep polishes is that they change in the light sometimes, and this one tends to go from the bottle color to a lilac color. I've gotten a lot of compliments on this one too! I haven't yet tried Sushmita, but I sure am excited to! I looked online and the color seems to be a very nice pink with their "silk finish".

(This is a week-old manicure by the way, isn't that crazy?)

Have you tried Julep Maven yet? If not you can sign up here.

Fall Semester Goals

If you've been into a Target recently you've noticed that the Back to School Section has taken over the whole store - I'm not kidding, they have dorm stuff what seems like outlining each aisle. My new roommate moved in yesterday, my school email is blowing up again, and quite frankly my planner gets boring when there's not much to put in it.

I've always heard that one of the habits of highly productive people is setting out their goals ahead of time. Its crazy to think that this year I will be entering my Junior year of college - the past two years have absolutely flown by! School starts in about a week and I figured now was as good a time as any to set out those goals.

  1. Make above an 80 in all my classes // Sounds totally reasonable right? I have this nasty habit of hitting exactly what I need to pass the class or the .2 points away (I'm retaking statistics over 2 points this semester). If I can keep above an 80 I will be a happy camper.
  2. Stand out at work // A great job to have during college is working retail, and I just love my store. I started working there back in May and this fall I really hope to stand out as an associate. No job is undignified and you never know where the opportunities will take you!
  3. Start networking // Before you know it, I will be graduating which is the scariest thought in the world right now. This semester I want to figure out just what it is that I want to do and meet professionals in my field - fingers crossed for an internship next summer.
  4. Grow PYB // I have lots of plans in store for the blog - stay tuned!
  5. Put away $400 // I told myself I would do this over the summer, and it didn't really happen. This semester I think that is totally doable. Putting it away now will make Christmas shopping so much easier come holiday time.

But you know, this has a totally valid point.

Do you have any goals for the school year? Let me know!

Liebster Award

Half the reason I started blogging was because of the community out there and if you're a fellow blogger you know exactly what I'm talking about. Blogger girls are literally the best in the world (can we start that? #bloggergirlsbestintheworld) - they're not perfect and they sure don't pretend to be. They embrace their quirks and focus not only on improving themselves, but bringing other girls up with them. Its a very positive and encouraging community (and if you're not already a blogger I highly suggest you start one!).

I was so, so excited when I saw that Kristin from The Dixie Daisy nominated me for the Liebster Award - thank you so much Kristin it completely made my day!!

Here is how it works -

  1. You post 11 facts about yourself
  2. Answer the 11 questions provided by the person who nominated you, and then create an eleven-question set for the next group of nominees
  3. Choose eleven people to nominate and link them in the post
  4. Let your nominees know they've been tagged - and no tag-backs!
  5. Nominate blogs under 200 followers
Eleven facts about me -

  1. I can't ride a bike
  2. I'm allergic to roses, well really the rose oil. It makes me break out in a bad rash (which really stinks when rose smelling beauty products are your favorite).
  3. I really, really don't like brown clothing but always go with the natural brown when it comes to shoes and handbags.
  4. I was raised Catholic and was very involved in my high school youth group. (#youthcouncilpresident y'all)
  5. I could drink my weight in Bojangles sweet tea, and prefer the stores on the eastern side of NC (different ownership and better quality ingredients!)
  6. I'm a finance major with a shopping problem.
  7. I also really, really like using hashtags in every day conversation. #isthatweird #sorrynotsorry
  8. I've never not had a dog growing up.
  9. I would pick a night of wine and Sweet Home Alabama over the club scene any day.
  10. I have a birth mark on my leg that looks like South America.
  11. My coozie collection can rival anyone out there - I keep them just about everywhere!
Kristin's questions -

  1. If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be? I actually love where I live, so I would have to say North Carolina.
  2. What do you like to do when you're bored? I love painting my nails - its one of my favorite past times.
  3. What is your most loved purchase? The Anne Kline watch I bought myself for my 16th birthday. It was the first "nice" thing I bought myself and I still wear it every day.
  4. What is the last piece of clothing you bought? A new tee from Vineyard Vines - back to school shopping at it's finest.
  5. What is your favorite thing you did over the summer? The beach trips I took with my family! I was only able to get down a few times but each time was great.
  6. Where do you see yourself in five years? Hopefully with a great job, and possibly engaged.
  7. What is your go-to hairstyle? I love wearing my hair up in those donut buns, they are so easy to do and look fantastic!
  8. Do you wear more silver or gold jewelry? Definitely gold, which is funny because growing up I hated gold jewelry.
  9. What are your daily makeup essentials? Baby Skin primer, Covergirl foundation, Maybelline powder, Physicians Formula bronzer, Covergirl eyeshadow & liner, and I love Lorreal's mascara.
  10. What is your favorite store? Not going to lie, probably Trader Joes.
My eleven questions -

  1. If you were an animal, what kind of animal would you be?
  2. What's your favorite kind of drink?
  3. How do you relax?
  4. How often do you paint your nails?
  5. What's the best piece of advice you could give someone?
  6. What's your favorite thing to order at Starbucks?
  7. How would you describe your relationship with your BFF?
  8. Are you a early bird or a night owl?
  9. Who is your biggest girl crush?

  11. Why did you start blogging?
My nominees -

  1. Hill at From Mississippi With Love

Have a fabulous weekend y'all!

Week Recap - Beach Trip

I'm sorry I've been such a terrible blogger lately - last week my first night at the beach (so Sunday) I sat down and had all these ideas of post I wanted to crank out while at the beach. Now it's the following Wednesday and none of them were even started. I did make sure to take lots of photos though - so I figured I had to share!

I met my family down at Topsail Island (if you've ever been to a NC beach let me know!) for the week expecting sunshine. Wrong - it literally rained every single day we were there. I think the only relatively nice day was Friday. So between the mud and seemingly hurricane-like storm we had Wednesday night we played a lot of cards, watched a lot of movies, and did some shopping around the island.

(The two above photos are from the cutest little beach furniture store on the island - is it weird when you get excited about home decorations?)

Friday of course we had to get out on the boat and do some fishing. There are little islands off of the island that you can anchor your boat, walk off and enjoy the day. We stopped at one of those for a while before heading to Seers Landing for lunch - and then had a relaxing afternoon sitting on the dock. Per usual I got a little too much sun but it was so worth it.

As rainy as it was, I definitely needed the little mental break before heading back to school.

What have y'all been up to as of late? Let me know!

Friday Five

Happy Friday! Today has actually started out as a really good day which is just what I needed after such a hectic week. I woke up on time by myself, it was raining outside (I LOVE rainy days), and my coffee came out perfectly! Its the little things you know? I haven't done a Friday Five in a while and wanted to switch it up a little - this week especially I have seen so many great articles and videos I wanted to share with y'all!
  • What Your College Major Says About You // I feel like I can get lost reading articles on buzz feed sometimes - this one I saw scrolling through Facebook and thought was pretty funny. The best part? My major is represented by Leonardo DiCaprio #wolfofwallstreet
  • Automated Thanking Machine #TDThanksYou // Again, another thing I found on Facebook. I literally started tearing up watching this for the first time - I love it when businesses give back to their customers and this one was SO personal too. Do you remember the airline that gave presents to their passengers? (Watch it here) It's another one of my favorites.
  • What Thigh Gaps Looked Like in 1945 // Its basically a photo of the Miss America contestants back in 1945 - notice not one of them has a thigh gap and each one of them is still absolutely stunning! It just shows how much the standard of beauty has changed thanks to the media that surrounds us. Remember ladies, healthy over skinny any day!
  • How To Use A Paper Towel // Ignore the title, just go watch this TED talk asap. Hill over at From Mississippi with Love had this in her friday five last week and I was SO surprised when I tried it out - it really works! I would definitely not call myself a granola, but I do try to be as eco-friendly as I possibly can. With this idea a little habit can make a big difference.
  • My New Favorite Beauty Guru // I literally stumbled across her videos right after my favorite guru's post back in June and hate that I couldn't include this girl. She quickly flew up to my number one fav - total girl crush!! Definitely make sure to check her out, her videos are amazing quality and she is so funny.
What are your big weekend plans? I will be working and watching my roommate's dog so enjoy it for me!

Always, kTm
